About Me

I'm Matthew, a Singaporean journalist with a love for telling stories grounded in the world around us. My work aims to show people the big picture that affects all of us — whether in defense, geopolitics, business, or the economy — in a personal way. I believe that stories with hard data are critical, but must always be accessible through strong narratives, emotion, and tension.

I joined Business Insider as an intern in 2021, and rose to become our bureau's Senior News Reporter.

My Background

I grew up in Chengdu, Sichuan, for eight years while my parents did social work in China. There, I studied at an international school and lived among Americans, South Koreans, Europeans, and students of other nationalities. Each of them helped shape my understanding of how people around the globe live and think.

I studied journalism at the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, where I graduated with honors (distinction) in 2021. During my university years, I co-founded a student news publication when our official school paper shut down. I was also editor-in-chief of our flagship journalism program, Going Overseas for Advanced Reporting, in 2020.

I am a Singaporean citizen who speaks English (native) and Mandarin (conversational).
